In Conversation with Astoria Zine Club: The Story Behind Snatch
I recently had the chance to sit down with Jules Burke for Astoria Zine Club's Creative Output interview series to talk about Snatch's evolution from a college assignment to an independent women's sports publication. I'm honored to be the first artist featured in this new series - excited to see who Jules talks to next.
We covered a lot of ground - the Riot Grrrl class that started it all, how the name came from Olympic weightlifting (and yes, I knew it was a double entendre), and the journey from documenting a tiny niche sport to celebrating the entire women's sports fan community. Jules asked great questions about what makes the RISO printing process special, why I prioritize fan culture over breaking news, and how "bulky is not the worst thing a woman can be" became one of my most resonant designs.
One thing that really stood out in our conversation was talking about being the gardener versus being the garden - sometimes you're creating for yourself, and sometimes you're creating space for other people's voices. Right now, with Issue 1 sold out and Issue 2 in the works, I'm definitely in gardener mode.
